  • 6 week photography workshop

    Instructor: Rebecca Jay, Oakland Photographer

This hands-on class is designed for beginner and intermediate photographers, anyone who finds themselves perplexed by their cameras’ functions and wants to learn to “paint with light” with more intention. Through assignments, lessons, and discussions students will be supported in their self-expression as they explore technical and aesthetic aspects of the medium. Whether working in digital or analogue film, students will become familiar with the camera’s manual modes, using aperture and shutter speed to achieve various goals. Each class will include a brief history of the genre of the week (i.e. portraiture) as it relates to the weeks’ assignment and historical trends will be introduced. The instructor will assign weekly projects, address any technical concerns, give individual feedback and lead engaging conversations around students’ work.

    Thursdays from March 2-April 6, 2023

    Time: 6:30-8:30pm

    Six 2 hour classes - $285

To reserve your spot, please Venmo $285 to @oaklandartsandhealing and include your first and last name and email address under “What’s it for?” Class fees are nonrefundable but may be transferrable. For more information, email: oaklandartsandhealing@gmail.com

  • slow stitching

“Slow Stitching” is a term coined by quilter personality Mark Limpinski as an extension of the Slow Movement which began in the 1980s but which has roots in earlier concepts of fostering alternatives to the value our culture places on immediacy. Slow stitching is fiber art created by hand, rather than machine. Embroidery, quilting, rug hooking, weaving and more are all examples of slow stitching. In this workshop we will use fiber supplies from our own “stashes” be it fabric scraps from prior fiber art projects, old clothes that we no longer need or anything else that needs up-purposing and can be stitched upon. We will spend some time orienting ourselves to the craft and planning a simple project. Then we will spend some time silently and mindfully stitching. Finally, we will reflect on the experience of slowing down and meditating on the act of hand stitching.

    Date & Time: TBD

    3 hours - $125

  • ink making

In this workshop, you make both the medium and the art. Participants will learn about the history and methods of ink making from natural materials, participate in a demonstration and engage in art making with inks made from copper wire, oak caps and berries. The process is experimental and results vary widely from from person/plant. This workshop is about encouraging flow and letting go.

    Date and Time TBD
